On Saturday morning we placed a further 3.5m3 of concrete into the inspection pit facilities under construction in our rail vehicle shed. This nearly completes the 24-metre long inspection pit wall (just 2m left at the Upper Hutt end) and we now have two of the five upper floor sections poured.

During July and August we have been preparing the inspection pit wall and floor areas for concrete. The upper floor areas needed a substantial amount of back-filling and compaction, using material that had been stock-piled from the original excavation, topped up with a few loads of base and top course.

We are grateful for substantial funding assistance towards the inspection pit facilities from Rimutaka Trust. We hope to be installing rail on the second road of the inspection pit during the next couple of months.

In early August we placed reinforcing and mesh into the floor areas, and installed reinforcing and form work to another 8 metres of pit wall.
