Rail vehicle shed

Some of the team working on the rail vehicle shed

The rail vehicle shed at Maymorn has been one of the primary projects for the Trust over the last few years. A huge amount of design work, engineering consultation, planning and project management has gone into the structure. The vast majority of the foundation work, component fabrication and final construction has been undertaken by volunteers working in their spare time. The decision to replicate an original 1911 New Zealand Railways 2-road engine shed design has paid dividends in that the Maymorn station has a real railway depot “feel” about it. The building will also complement future heritage railway operations.

Another milestone for rail vehicle shed

On Saturday 27 August 2011 we finally closed in the rail vehicle shed, fitting the last of three pedestrian access doors. Over the past few months we have also installed four big bi-folding train doors - so we're fairly close to having a complete exterior shell.

Remaining exterior work includes:

  • fitting corner flashings
  • two small soffit areas
  • train door opening mechanisms and anchor points
  • gutter, spouting and stormwater.

Rail vehicle shed progress

Construction of the Trust’s Rail Vehicle Shed at Maymorn is at an advanced stage, with all wall cladding installed, both ends clad in, all roofing steel in position. We are also working on an extensive inspection pit facility within the shed. We are indebted to Rimutaka Trust for two recent grants that have enabled us to complete cladding of the main shed and make major progress with the inspection pit.

Another brilliant day — train doors at the Kaitoke end of the shed are now fully clad with ColorSteel®.

Work in progress - December 2018

The interior of our rail vehicle shed has been transformed over the past couple of months, with hard fill compacted into place and concrete floors laid. Once completed visitors to our railway will be able to access and view all the rail vehicles in our collection.

We're grateful for funding from Pelorus Trust, Cossie Club Upper Hutt, supporting the effort put in by Trust members.
