Heritage Railway Project
The Rimutaka Incline Railway Heritage Trust aims to reinstate and operate a world-class heritage railway between Wellington and the Wairarapa. The Railway will be a unique tourist attraction for Wellington and New Zealand, and a major contributor to the regional economy.
Shunting locomotive arrives at Maymorn

Our first complete locomotive - TR937 - arrived at Maymorn on Friday 30th July 2010. The locomotive will be used for shunting and track construction work at Maymorn, and will play a key role in future reinstatement of the Rimutaka Incline Railway from Maymorn to Kaitoke, Summit and Cross Creek.
TR937 was one of nine 20-tonne shunting locomotives built to this design at the New Zealand Railways Hillside Workshops in Dunedin during the 1970s. Working in the Manawatu for much of its life, it had been stored out of service in Wellington for over a year before being purchased by the Trust.
On Friday 30th July 2010 the loco was loaded onto a road transporter at Hutt Workshops for delivery to our Maymorn site. Unloading involved two cranes, which placed the loco onto track leading into our rail vehicle shed. In essentially operational condition one can expect to see the loco working on the Rimutaka Incline Railway in the not-too-distant future.

Remutaka or Rimutaka?
The Trust welcomes debate on the historical accuracy of the name Remutaka, the name that was given to the mountain range by Haunuiananaia, an ancestor of the Te Ati Hau a Paparangi people of the Whanganui region. The railway reinstatement project seeks to faithfully replicate our railway heritage - and accuracy of place names also deserves our attention and respect.

Newsletter 25
News from the Trust dated May 2010.
Our latest newsletter, in which we report on substantial progress made with the rail vehicle shed over past months, with all roof cladding installed, both ends and a good amount of wall cladding. Inspection pits are also under construction inside the shed, and a commissioning ceremony is planned on Saturday 25 September 2010.
Our mainline track now extends out towards the Tranz Metro station, and within a few short months we hope to double its length or more.

Rail Vehicle Shed
Construction of the Trust’s Rail Vehicle Shed at Maymorn is at an advanced stage, with ¾ of wall cladding installed, both ends clad in, all roofing steel in position. We are currently working on an extensive inspection pit facility within the shed, funded by Rimutaka Trust.
We are indebted to the following organisations who have funded work to date: Rimutaka Trust, The Community Trust of Wellington, New Zealand Lottery Grants Board, Lion Foundation, Cossie Club of Upper Hutt and donations from Trust members. The majority of the shed work has been done by volunteers, including design and project management, foundations, structural steel and cladding installation.
A selection of our latest photos are shown below. Visit the Maymorn Rail Vehicle Shed Flickr Set for our latest photos and a record of work stretching back to the start of the shed project.

Track laying progress
A lot of progress has been made with track laying at Maymorn since the formation was excavated and prepared in late 2009. Work has occurred in two main areas: the yard throat connecting the mainline with the rail vehicle shed, and our future mainline heading northwards through the station yard.
