Sponsorship overview
The Trust invites people and organisations to sponsor a length of track. This involves:
- Purchasing components;
- Preparation of railway formation;
- Laying sleepers;
- Placing and securing rails;
- Placing ballast;
- Lifting, lining and packing track.
Plain track will be laid with either concrete or timber sleepers, depending on quality and availability considerations. An initial supply of suitable concrete sleepers have been sourced for initial track requirements at Maymorn.
The length of track included in the sponsorship plans is 675mm, dictated by the designed sleeper spacing.
Current track requirements are for future mainline, loop and siding tracks at Maymorn, 6km northeast of Upper Hutt. A number of buildings and structures require railway track to function, including the planned station building, platform, rail vehicle shed, water tanks and turntable. Your contribution through sponsoring a length of track will make a difference!
Certificate
All plans include a certificate recognising your contribution to the Rimutaka Incline Railway. Details that identify your sleeper will be included, along with the plan type.
Virtual locator
All plans are covered by the virtual locator feature on the Trust’s web site. You will be able to find the exact location of the sponsored length of track, and view a photo of the track in its surroundings. Your personal details will not be given online unless you request otherwise.
The Trust reserves the right to relocate sponsored sleepers and/or track if required, but will endeavour to retain its original location wherever possible.
Register
All contributions will be recorded in a track sponsorship register, which will be available for viewing at Maymorn station.
Plaque
All plans include a plaque mounted on the top surface of the relevant sleeper, so that you can identify and locate the length of track you have sponsored. The plan names do not mean that your plaque will be manufactured from the precious metals of the same name — for both cost and security reasons!
The plaques will have dimensions of approximately 100 x 130mm, with characters approximately 25mm high (exception: Gold Option, where you may elect to have smaller character sizes in order to fit your chosen inscription).
Payment
Cheque, credit card or auto-payment options are available for all three plans.
Bronze Plan
An entry-level plan, with each sleeper identified with the current year and a serial number. These are covered by the virtual locator feature on the Trust’s web site.
Location
Anywhere — your sponsored length of track could be located anywhere at Maymorn station, according to track laying priorities at the time.
Plaque
Sleepers sponsored in the Bronze Plan will have a plaque affixed to them, displaying an acronym of the Trust’s name: RIRHT, the current year, and a serial number.
Silver Plan
An intermediate plan, with each sleeper identified by your choice of year and a serial number. These are covered by the virtual locator feature on the Trust’s web site.
Location
Your sponsored length of track will be located at Maymorn station in a readily accessible position, according to track laying priorities at the time. You will be able to view the length of track from areas that are accessible by the public.
Plaque
Sleepers sponsored in the Silver Plan will have a plaque affixed to them, displaying an acronym of the Trust’s name: RIRHT, your choice of year, and a serial number. The example shown displays the year 1957. The year you choose might relate to your birthday, a family or other significant event that you wish to celebrate.
Membership
1 year’s membership is included with the Silver Plan.
Gold Plan
A premium plan, with each sleeper identified with your choice of characters, for example your name. These are covered by the virtual locator feature on the Trust’s web site.
Location
Your sponsored length of track will be located at Maymorn station in a highly visible, readily accessible position, according to track laying priorities at the time. Current examples include track located in the future mainline alongside the station platform.
Plaque
Sleepers sponsored in the Gold Plan will have a plaque affixed to them, displaying your choice of characters. You may choose any inscription you wish, provided that it fits the dimensions of the plaque (approximately 100 x 130mm). Note that longer inscriptions will, by neccessity, result in smaller character sizes which will be less easy to read from the trackside.
We will be in contact with you to finalise your details.
Membership
Life membership is included with the Gold Plan, in recognition of the significant support given to the Trust.
Station plaque
Your name will be included on a plaque affixed to a building at Maymorn station. The first building likely to be completed will be a rail vehicle shed — but may be transferred to the station building once built.
Biography
You may also wish to take up the option of having a biography produced, which may record your interest and involvement that lead to you supporting the Track sponsorship promotion. Alternatively, you might wish to a biography produced for a family member or friend, perhaps in memory of past associations with the Rimutaka Incline, or other railway involvements.
Biographies may optionally be published on the Trust’s web site, and/or in displays at Maymorn or other public events. We will discuss options that are available to you.
Alternatively, you may elect to remain anonymous — this can be accomodated also.
