The railway from Wellington to Upper Hutt was opened on 1 February 1876, on completion of the Hutt Contract by Mr Charles McKirdy. Approximately half of the original route is still in use, including much of the foreshore route from Wellington to Petone Junction and Melling and from Silverstream to Upper Hutt. Silver Stream Railway has seen the reinstatement of former Wellington and Masterton Railway formation near Silverstream.
The Rimutaka Incline Railway proposal would see heritage trains depart from Upper Hutt station for the railway proper at Maymorn via existing Tranz Rail track.
