Proposed Operating Timetable

A timetable has been designed in order to evaluate the capacity of the proposed tourist-heritage railway route between Upper Hutt, Summit and Cross Creek. The timetable features hourly departures from Upper Hutt, a fifteen-minute stop for refreshments and locomotive watering at Kaitoke, and a 45-minute stop at Summit in order to visit the proposed visitor and discovery centre.

Fell Incline portion of train graph

Fell Incline portion of train graph, proposed operating timetable. Two viewing options are available.

The frequency at which trains may pass up the Fell Incline has a spill-over effect on the remainder of the route. The uphill journey facing down trains is scheduled to take 45 minutes, contrasting with the descent at 20 minutes. Shunting, locomotive and brake van servicing will take almost the same amount of time, resulting in a 2-hour cycle for trains on the Incline. This means that only every second train departing from Upper Hutt may descend the Incline. The alternate trains travel between Upper Hutt and Summit only.

Initial timetable

The initial timetable would most likely involve one or two return trips between Upper Hutt and Summit, using a single train. Numbers 2 + 5 and 6 + 9 would be the most likely to be run, to schedules that would permit additional services without adjustment.

Viewing options

Two viewing options are available for the trial timetable train graph:

GIF Train Graph
Full GIF version of the train graph, being a screen-shot of a Scalable Vector Graphics format graph.
SVG Train Graph
Train graph in Scalable Vector Graphics format, which as the name implies, is stored as a series of vector graphics, and may be scaled up or down in size.
Note: requires a SVG viewer to view, the Adobe SVG viewer being highly recommended.

Other services

Green and blue coloured dotted lines appearing between Upper Hutt and Maymorn represent the train paths of Wairarapa commuter services. Some of the proposed heritage train timings have been altered to fit around these paths.
